Hiking with children: finding routes that actually work

Children measure a day differently than adults. The summit does not decide it — a stream, an alp with animals and a proper break do.

How it works

  1. Pick a destination with something halfway: an alp, a lake, a hut.
  2. Check the surface: Peakflow breaks every route down by ground. A pushchair needs firm and wide throughout.
  3. Look at the gradient: above 12 per cent pushing becomes work.
  4. Check opening days — a closed hut is not a small mistake when you are with kids.

How far can children walk?

As a rough guide: a four-year-old manages 3 to 4 km with 150 metres of ascent; at eight, 8 km and 400 metres are realistic — if something happens along the way. Pure ascents without variety are hard going even for fit children.

Pushchair or carrier?

On alp roads and wide valley paths the pushchair works well. As soon as roots, steps or loose gravel appear, the carrier is the better choice — the surface breakdown shows you where the firm path ends.

Safety

Exposed terrain is off limits with children even when the route counts as T2. Peakflow colours exposed sections so you see them at home, not at the spot.

Frequently asked

Are there ready-made family routes?

Yes, Peakflow suggests routes with an alp or lake as the destination and marks pushchair-friendly sections.

How do I plan breaks?

Reckon on about one and a half times the normal walking time and at least one longer break per hour.

What if the weather turns?

Peakflow shows the best window of the day and warns about approaching storms — with children an early start is almost always right.
